Eric Rasmussen shares an update and the banding tally from the hummingbird research project.

Bird Field Note 6/8/16 Hummingbird Banding Update Eric Rasmussen

After eight sessions (four at the low site, and four at the high), we’ve banded a grand total of 38 hummingbirds.

The width of the outer tail feather and the lengths of the outer three tail feathers help distinguish this bird from similar species. Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, a species that may shift their range north, look almost identical.

The only male Calliope banded at the high site has a deformed bill, slightly bent at the tip and twisted along the upper maxilla. He is missing feathers on the left side of the head where the bill joins. He appears unaffected by this abnormality. Orange pollen spots his bill base.
