05-25-16 Raptor Research Update

May 25, 2016

Raptor View Research share raptor spring migration count totals, and satelite tracking updates.

We counted 83 migrating raptors this week, and the majority were Accipiters. As the season comes to an end, we expect to see more Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks than other species.

We monitor a Golden Eagle that was banded last year in its nest near Nome, Alaska. This second-year bird started heading back to its natal grounds on May 3. In the past week, it has covered over 1,500 miles! We have been expecting this young bird to migrate for a couple of weeks, but were surprised to see it travel so quickly.
