January Volunteer Opportunities

Eagle Capture & Banding
Thursday 1/15 & 1/29 11am - 3pm
Join MPG and Raptor View Research Institute for this unique opportunity. Volunteers will observe the live capture of bald and golden eagles and get to participate in the banding process. This event is based out of a ranch house, so participants can stay warm. We will live-stream video from the capture site to a large screen at the house so visitors can observe the trapping process while remaining at a safe distance. Spotting scopes will be available for an alternate view from the outside deck overlooking the capture site. Researchers will bring the eagles to the house for processing. The day will include an overview of the research to date, including migratory flight data showing the extent of the eagles' range into Alaska. This event is limited to 6 participants. Winter Tracking at MPG North in the Swan Valley
Saturday 1/17 9:30am - 4:30pm
Help MPG North identify winter land use by wildlife. Tracking is limited to 6 volunteers per outing. Lunch is not provided for this event. Transportation is provided. Volunteers will meet at the MPG Missoula office and carpool in a ranch vehicle. Please contact us to register. We will reply with directions.

Winter Tracking at MPG Ranch in Florence
Saturday 1/31 10am - 4pm
Help MPG with the winter mountain lion population survey. Volunteers will backtrack lions and assist with the collection of DNA via hair samples. Tracking is limited to 6 volunteers per outing. Lunch and transportation are not provided for this event. Please contact us to register. We will reply with directions. This event is in collaboration with the Montana Wilderness Association.

About the Author

Joshua Lisbon

Joshua graduated from the University of Montana, Missoula, in 2009 with an M.A. in Intercultural Youth and Family Development. Joshua has designed and implemented wilderness and experiential-based education programs for various agencies since 2001. He has worked in Missoula since 2005 predominately with disadvantaged populations providing challenging and empowering programming for youth and adults alike.At MPG, Joshua works to coordinate with local agencies and school districts as well as the university to connect students and members of the community to MPG’s work. He also recruits and mobilizes volunteers to accomplish various projects for the ranch. In his free time, Joshua enjoys exploring Montana’s wild places. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoys any pursuit that keeps him connected to the natural world.
