09-19-16 UMBL Update

September 19, 2016

The University of Montana Bird Ecology Lab shares an update on their songbird banding efforts.

In this week of fall migration banding, we captured a total of 221 birds between two stations, a slight increase from last week’s total of 213 birds.

Wilson’s Warblers (Cardellina pusilla) are one of our top captures every fall. We measured the length of its black cap to determine the sex of this bird, which is male.

We capture Clay-colored Sparrows (Spizella pallida) in far fewer numbers than one of their close relatives, the Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina).

We captured our first Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) this week at the Floodplain station.
