10-11-16 Biocrust Field Note

October 11, 2016

Rebecca Durham's field note shows biocrust, new starts on forbs, lichen succession, and fall decay.

Star moss’s long awns hold beads of water suspended by saturation (Syntrichia ruralis).

New rosettes emerge from low pussytoes, one of the native perennial forbs with a second surge of vegetative growth. (Antennaria dimorpha).

In well developed biocrust, lichens becomes more abundant.

In late successional biocrust, organisms may compete for sunlight and substrate.
